History

The choir began in 2014 and draws its membership from Church Stretton and the surrounding towns and villages of South Shropshire.

There are around thirty members at present and since the choir began, participants have ranged from teenagers to people in their eighties.

Ethos

We work largely from a Natural Voice standpoint:  each session includes some technical work - breathing, vocal exercises, and listening skills to help build both group and individual confidence. Most of the songs are traditional and unaccompanied although we also sing other styles which benefit from keyboard accomapniment.

Experienced members of the group are happy to support new members to find their voices.  We sing in harmony, most usually in two, three or four parts (these being Soprano, Mezzo/higher alto, lower alto (aka The Gruffly Birds) and Baritone.

Alongside our Thursday night rehearsals the choir holds occasional longer workshops on weekends, plus social get togethers throughout the year.

Joining The Choir

There are no auditions - just come along and try us for size!

There’s no requirement to read music: some of the choir members do, but lots prefer to learn new pieces by ear. Many of the lyric sheets and shorter scores are provided as part of your subscription, however, we make a small charge for longer and commercial arrangements to cover purchase and printing costs.

Fees are payable weekly or members can opt to pay for a specific, consecutive ten week block in advance in order to a receive a discount.
